How to get through 100 wall balls

Wall balls are the last station, and the one that breaks most first races. The fix is a plan you decide in training, not at rep 70.

The standard

  • 100 reps. 4 kg (Women Open), 6 kg (Men Open, Women Pro), 9 kg (Men Pro).
  • Target: 2.70 m for women, 3.00 m for men.
  • Hips below the knees at the bottom; start standing tall with the ball in both hands.

Pick a set plan

PlanSetsGood for
10 × 10Ten sets of 10, short restsMost first-timers. Easy to count, hard to blow up.
5 × 20Five sets of 20If you can do 30+ unbroken when fresh.
20, 20, 15, 15, 10, 10, 10Descending setsStrong starters who fade.

Going to failure turns into long, messy rests. Small planned sets with short breaks almost always add up faster.

Train it tired

Practise your exact set plan after running and lunges, not fresh. In Doubles, practise the handover too: hand the ball over or let it drop, never throw it to your partner mid-rep.

Questions

How many wall balls are in HYROX?

100, as the eighth and final station, after the last 1 km run.

How should I break up 100 wall balls?

Most first-timers do best with planned small sets, like 10 sets of 10 with short rests, rather than going to failure and resting long.
